AIML Research Seminar: Creating a Video Narrative From a Text-based Screen Play
- Date: Tue, 1 Jul 2025, 10:30 am - 11:30 am
- Location: AIML
- Sam Hodge Machine Learning Engineer, AIML
In this session, Sam Hodge, AIML Machine Learning Engineer, explains the process of using synthetic actors to perform dialog specified in a screen play using a combination of audio and 3D speech synthesis and then overcoming the “uncanny valley” sensation through stylisation with ongoing work toward photorealism.
Sam has a background in film making with a career working on Hollywood feature films between 2003 and 2019 at Rising Sun Pictures here in ɫ and Weta Digital in Wellington New Zealand. Generative AI is currently being explored at a rapid pace by film makers wanting to overcome the expense and inconvenience of many hands on a practical film set. With new tools the artistic endeavour moves to the fidelity of the new medium, such as silent films to talkies, but the audience experience the narratives through lived experience so the story telling remains the same.
