ÌýAbout the Libraries

At the Centre of the University is the Library system, comprising the Main Library and its School/branch libraries. The Library’s aim and objectives are to to serve the academic, teaching, study and research needs of the University community.

Objectives of the Library

The objectives of the University Library reflect the objectives of the University. These are:

  1. To provide library and information resources and services;
  2. To improve management techniques in the provisions of library services;
  3. To provide teaching, study and research facilities;
  4. To provide library and information resources and services;

  7. To organize training programmes for library staff locally, regionally and internationally;
  8. To organize and conduct library orientation, instruction and induction courses for both students and academic staff in the proper use of the library;
  9. To establish library cooperation with partners, especially in the western world;
  10. To serve the academic, teaching and research needs of the University community and to use the knowledge and skills acquires to exploit the vast and varied natural resources for national development.
Opening Hours

The ÑÇÖÞÉ«°É Main Library opens on Monday to Friday from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm. On Saturdays from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm. The Libraries remain close on Sundays and public holidays.

Library Rules and Regulations
  1. Silence must be observed in all public reading areas.
  2. Mobile phones are not allowed in the library. A fine is charged for use of mobile phones within the library.
  3. Readers must not take bags, briefcases, paper bags etc. into the library without the permission of the University Librarian. Coats, bags may be left at the entrance of the library.
  4. Smoking and consumption of food and drinks are forbidden in all parts of the library.
  5. The reservation of seats in the public areas of the library is not permitted.
  6. No person may borrow books from the library until he or she has signed a library registration card agreeing to abide by the Library regulations.
  7. Here and elsewhere the terms “BOOKS” is deemed to cover all types of library materials.
  1. A borrower remains responsible for a book as long as the borrowing form remains un-cancelled.
  2. Borrowing cards are not interchangeable.
  3. Loss of cards should be reported in writing to the University Librarian.
  4. Academic staff of the University may borrow up to 4 volumes at a time for a period of two weeks.
  5. Administrative and technical staff of the University may borrow up to two volumes for a period of two weeks.
  6. An external borrower may have up to 2 volumes at any time for a period of two weeks.
  7. An external borrower may be required to pay a non-refundable membership fees of SSP 1,000.
  8. Students must leave their valid library cards behind when borrowing reserved books.
  9. If a requested book is in use, one reservation may be made on the borrowing form for the next period of loan only.
  10. Books in excess of the stipulated numbers may be borrowed only in special circumstances and by permission of the University Librarian.
  11. Books in circulation which are required for the reserved section for ANY OTHER SPECIAL PURPOSE may be recalled at any time regardless of the date of issue.
  12. Reminders about overdue books will be sent to the borrower twice (i.e. two reminders) at a week’s interval. A third reminder will be in the form of a final letter presuming the book is lost and the reader liable to pay for its replacement.
  13. No further loans of any kind will be made to a borrower who has books in his/her possession which he/she has failed to return in response to a recall notice.
  14. A fine of SSP 1,000 a day is payable on overdue until the reader reports that the book is lost.
  15. Borrowers and readers are responsible for any book in their charge and will be required to pay the current cost of a book for replacement of lost, damaged or defaced books together with a non-refundable administrative charge (To be decided) to cover cost of ordering, cataloguing and other processing activities.
  16. Fines and charges for lost books will be collected by the assistants at the issue desk [Circulation Section] and receipt issued.
How to find books in the library

Books in the Library are organized according to subjects using Dewey Decimal System. The numbers tell not only where the book should be housed on shelves, but what kind of material it contains. For example, books 000-099 are classified as generalities and usually consists of encyclopedias, newspapers etc., while 100-199 are philosophy and psychology, etc.

  1. All the books have a call number. The book shelf are labeled according to
  2. Use these labels to locate which bookshelf your book is on. The labels contain a range of letters and numbers, for example, QA 100.74 to QA 300.70.A30. if your book’s call number falls within the range,, then begin looking through that bookshelf.
  3. Look at the numbers on the books spine. The books are also organized alphabetically, so use the call number to locate the book.
  4. Ask a librarian if you cannot locate the book. The staff member will go and look for the bo0k for you.
Where to put the book after reading

Leave the book on the reading table after reading. Librarians can reserve the books for you. Shelving the books yourself can lead to the book being misplaced and lost for a while.
