How to get cut-through in an information-saturated world
Telling the stories of research to the public can be challenging because science often doesn鈥檛 fit neatly into the format of the short media 鈥榥ews story鈥, and social media is flooded with information, all of which is competing for users鈥 limited time and attention.
In addition, some of the lessons researchers learn about communicating with their peers and colleagues can, unfortunately, get in the way of effective communication with the general public.
During this workshop, we鈥檒l look at how you can tell your story in a punchy, engaging way, and provide you with valuable insights into the world of the media and science journalism.
We鈥檒l also discuss the social channels researchers can turn to now that X (Twitter) has become a major turn-off.
These lessons can be applied to stakeholder engagement, funding applications, public talks and outreach, as well as media work and boosting your social media presence.
About the presenter:
Dr Joe Milton, Senior News and Training Lead at the AusSMC, is an evolutionary biologist who, after studying plants for ten years at various Scottish universities, made a move into journalism. Since then, he has worked as the Assistant Editor of a pair of scientific journals for the Royal Society of Biology, and written for the Financial Times, Nature and New Scientist, among others. Joe joined the UK SMC in 2010 as a Senior Press Officer, before taking up a position at the AusSMC in 2012. He is a regular guest on ABC Weekend Nightlife and on ABC NSW & ACT Evenings. And for 10 years, Joe was one of ABC Radio National鈥檚 鈥榬esearch filters鈥, chatting science on the Drive show with hosts Waleed Ali, Patricia Karvelas, and Andy Park.
What attendees say about AusSMC workshops:
鈥淚t gave me a great insight into a world that I really didn't know very much about and has certainly changed some of the ways that I think about communicating my research.鈥
鈥淚 highly recommend this workshop to anyone who ever wants to communicate their work effectively.鈥
鈥淚 found myself using the techniques I learned in the workshop to explain what I did to my extended family in-laws over Zoom earlier today - and I think the explanation I gave was much more interesting and accessible than it would have been before the workshop!鈥
鈥淐ompletely changed my perspective on science communication. For the better.鈥
