Ever wanted to know what it's like participating in a Falling Walls Lab event? Hear from 2024 Flinders University participant, Dr Asara Senaratne.听

What made you apply for the Falling Walls Lab 亚洲色吧 event?
I applied for the Falling Walls Lab because I鈥檓 passionate about breaking down disciplinary walls between computer science and life sciences to solve real-world problems. The event offered a unique opportunity to share my research with a broader audience, receive feedback from diverse experts, and connect with innovators equally driven to create impact. I was especially drawn to the Lab's focus on pitching bold ideas that challenge the status quo, which is a perfect match for my interdisciplinary work in AI for virus modeling.

What idea did you pitch during the event?
I pitched an AI-powered system to model virus life cycles and detect anomalies that may signal new or mutated viruses. The solution leverages knowledge graphs and machine learning to simulate viral behaviors, providing virologists with a real-time, data-driven toolkit to understand how viruses emerge and evolve. This could significantly accelerate response times during outbreaks and support early-stage drug discovery.

What insights or advice would you give to future participants?
Focus on clarity and impact. Even the most complex research can be made accessible in three minutes if you connect it to a compelling real-world problem. Practice with people outside your field to refine your message. And don鈥檛 underestimate the value of storytelling. People remember stories more than facts. Use your time on stage to inspire, not just inform.

How was the experience? What were the highlights?
It was an incredibly energising and affirming experience. The highlight was connecting with a vibrant community of researchers and entrepreneurs who are reimagining the future across disciplines. Being selected as a finalist reaffirmed the value of translational research and the importance of making science publicly engaging. I really enjoyed listening to all the great work other participants do.

How has this experience shaped your future steps?
This experience reinforced my commitment to interdisciplinary research with real-world impact. It has encouraged me to pursue collaborations beyond academia, explore commercialisation pathways, and continue advocating for accessible science communication. It also gave me the confidence to take my ideas to international stages and continue bridging research with innovation. Furthermore, I learned about research impact communication, and its value.

It's not too late to sign up to Falling Walls Lab 亚洲色吧 2025! Don鈥檛 miss this opportunity to be part of a global event and showcase聽your breakthrough idea that creates a positive impact on science and society.
