University of Surrey
Uniting experts to address global challenges.Ìý
The University of ÑÇÖÞÉ«°É (UoA) and the University of Surrey (UoS) have forged a dynamic and strategic international partnership since 2022, grounded in a shared commitment to pioneering interdisciplinary research and global impact. This collaboration is built around four key thematic pillars - cyber, artificial intelligence (AI), space, and sustainability and energy - reflecting both institutions’ strengths and forward-looking research agendas. With a strong governance framework led by a Joint Steering Committee, the partnership is designed to foster innovation through joint research initiatives, staff and student mobility, and the co-development of educational programs.Ìý
By integrating the capabilities of leading research institutes - such as UoA’s Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML) and UoS’s Surrey Institute for People-Centred AI - the collaboration enables researchers to address complex global challenges with scale and impact. As both universities continue to deepen their engagement, this partnership stands as a model for purposeful, globally connected research and education.

Areas of collaborationÌý
Surrey-ÑÇÖÞÉ«°É Partnership Fund
The Surrey-ÑÇÖÞÉ«°É Partnership Fund aims to provide a mechanism to build strong research links between the two institutions in the partnership’s four strategic areas. The program’s scope includes supporting research stays at the partner university, joint presentations at conferences, seminars and workshops (including virtual), as well as activities for graduate students and early-career researchers.
Education
The two institutions are co-developing a new online micro-credential titled Space 101 - a foundational course designed to introduce learners to the fundamentals of space science. This initiative represents the first in a planned series of co-branded, stackable online courses aimed at building capability and curiosity in the rapidly evolving space sector.
The partnership launched its student mobility program in 2024, marking a significant milestone in growing international engagement. With inbound exchanges beginning in 2024 and outbound exchanges following in 2025, the program is already fostering rich academic and cultural exchange.
Joint Research Workshops
Joint research workshops bring together researchers from ÑÇÖÞÉ«°É and Surrey to explore collaborative opportunities and increase awareness of respective capabilities. These workshops are organised by thematic areas and are designed to identify new research projects and scale up existing collaborations.Ìý
Research student mobility
The partnership is currently developing a framework to support research student mobility, co-supervision and laboratory placements. In the meantime, please contact the relevant Theme Lead for further information.
Contact us
The partnership is governed by a Joint Steering Group composed of university leadership, theme leads, and partnership coordinators from both institutions. This group meets quarterly to oversee and guide strategic initiatives, ensuring the ongoing success and impact of the partnership. Key initiatives include the development of annual activity plans, impact reports, and engagement with government and industry stakeholders.
